We’ll start our Thursday tips with a match-up between Adrian Mannarino and Bjorn Fratangelo. The pair met just over a fortnight ago, and the result left no-one in any doubt about who was the better prepared player, as the Frenchman ran out 6-1 6-1 winner. He won more than half of the points on the American’s serve, and dominated the match – winning 60 of the 95 points during the match.
With a 2-0 head to head advantage, a big gulf in class, and a far stronger hard court record, we are firmly with the Frenchman Mannarino as he bids to silence the home fans who will be cheering for Fratangelo. For our second match, we’re going to hedge our bets by backing a decent priced outsider, but also taking a small bet on the handicap market as well. The match in question is Dominic Thiem versus Taylor Fritz, and in this one we reckon there is an outside chance that the home crowd will have something to cheer about.
Thiem is, of course, the far superior competitor. He’s up in 8th in the world now after a terrific season, but his hard court form still leaves some question marks to answer. While his is 71-40 overall across the last two seasons against Top 100 players, that drop to 20-19 on hard courts, or 18-14 without the top 10.
Frizt is exactly 100 spots lower – ranked 108th, but his trump card is his ability on the surface. His poor 18-30 overall Top 100 record is weak, but he’s actually 16-17 on hard courts (15-16) without the top 10. Fritz is capable of out serving Thiem on his day, and while he will need to get that part of the match right, if he does, he can negate Thiem to a certain degree.
Thiem then starts a justified favourite, but to be 1/5 is simply giving the Austrian too much respect. 7/2 is a fair shout on Fritz with a home crowd cheering him on, as is the +6.5 game handicap line at 4/5 with Corals.
