Max Hopp v James Wilson

Young German tungsten chucker Max Hopp takes on James Wilson in the last match this evening, but it could be a step too far, despite storming past Willie O'Connor in the opening round.

Hopp won that match 6-1 but he hasn't enjoyed any major success in ranked majors as yet in his relatively short career. He's been on the scene for about six years now, despite being just 22, and while he's show flashes of brilliance at times, he's not as yet, tasted any real success - only once reaching the last 16 of a major tournament - the European Champions back in 2016 where he lost 10-3 to James Wade.

Wilson isn't in the same class as most top 10 players, but he's in the group behind who are all capable up on the big stage, and he should be a strong favourite in this one based on his experience. He reached the quarter finals of the World Grand Prix earlier in the month - eventually losing a tight match to Peter Wright, and he may well have done better but for running into some truly world class players all too often over the past couple of years. He was beaten by MvG in the Worlds, was eliminated by Mensur Suljovic in the Grand Slam of Darts last year, and found Peter Wright too good in the World Matchplay.

All things considered, James Wilson is a strong pick at 5/6 with Sporting Bet.
